By Christian Dan Jensen, Thurineren:

”The smell of wild roses and sea water mingled with the beauty of late summer and a touch of melancholia. I walked down the pea gravel paved path. White sails shone bright against the evening blue sea. It was one of those unusually lovely evenings of late August in which you would want to immerse yourself.”

Thus begins chapter 1 of the coming novel, The Glass Wall, by Nanna Grønbech Petersen. And how do I know that, since the book has not been published yet? I know it because its author has chosen to share excerpts from her new book during its process on her blog, blog.ngpart.com, that she has named: The Glass Wall – a Novel in the making. – For me, it is a whole new way of working creatively; Sharing my considerations and ideas during the process of my new novel, The Glass Wall, says Nanna Grønbech Petersen.

The Glass Wall is the second novel by Nanna Grønbech Petersen. Prior to this, her Fantasy Children’s book: Magda on the Planet of the Dragons, has been published, this is about a girl called Magda, who feels let down by her parents who fight all the time and are too busy with their work. But then one night, she meets the young dragon, Dragild, and together they travel to the planet of the dragons. A good book, which is also about friendships and about remembering the true and good values in life, about love, imagination, being present, and spending time together. Her new novel, which she herself describes as ‘Magical Realism’, is very much inspired by the somewhat odd and twisted surroundings. There is no fixed date for when The Glass Wall needs to be done and ready for publication. But if you follow the process on the blog, where both images and text  reveal the author’s thoughts about the contents of this novel, it may be hard to wait…

October Year 2015

I had some time on my hand for I did not have to be in school until later, that is why I decided to walk with my bike along the water. The usual route, down the road  to the left, out on the patch of asphalt. Past the first ship yard. I soon reached the small fisherman’s hut, where I parked my bike. The house was black and made out of wood. A boat turned upside down was used for the roof. The windows were painted white. I wondered if there was something special inside the house which was always locked up with a rather big padlock on the door. I got my SLR camera out of the bag, and sat down on the bench beside the house. There were always new things to be discovered through the camera. I removed the cap from the lens and turned it on, then I caught a boat bridge and the sea. I turned around with the camera. Looked around. I zoomed in on the padlock, where a big spider had created its cobweb. I shot a few pictures, and put the camera away again. Two wild geese flew past me above my head. The sun broke through the clouds, and silver stars flickered on the waves, waves of restlessness poured over me with a great force. What is my true goal? I wondered, and picked a rose-hip, squeezed it open making  its seeds appear. I looked at the fisherman’s hut. I threw away the rose-hip and got up. I looked in through the round window in the door. The window was matt from dust and there were cobwebs on it as on the other two windows. The cobweb stuck to my fringe, it caught my forehead and nose. I stroked my face in one swift movement and removed the web. I could not see much through the small window, it was dark inside. I went to the window on the right, through this I could make out a picture of different knots, a bunch of fishing nets, a rope, a green thermal jacket, and some fenders. I took one step back. Something moved inside behind the window. Was there someone inside?

Excerpt from chapter 12

November Year 2015

Laura looked out of the window, it had begun to snow. A fine white blanket of snow soon covered the garden. She glanced at a small rose bush, it still bore flowers right here in the world which was turning white. It was afternoon. She needed some fresh air, and put on her coat, and went into the garden. She paused by the pine and looked at the rose in the snow. She turned her head and discovered some small imprints crossing the lawn, they were the size of a hedgehog’s footprints. She frowned, under normal circumstances, a hedgehog would curl up to a small spiky lump and hibernate now. Perhaps it was not a hedgehog at all? With curiosity, she began following the tracks, wondering where they might lead her? They began by the bushes and led her right across the garden and over to the hedge. She pushed away some branches, and through a hole in the hedge, she got out onto the pavement, which she continued along for a while. The imprints in the snow were clear, fine and small. Laura sensed a strong determination in them, they continued down the slope towards the sea. Now she was down by the still, dark water. The tracks went on along the path to the left, past the massive, dead ship yard without sound or smell. Right in front of the fisherman’s hut, the tracks ended. She paused at some distance from the hut. The door was ajar. Could the animal have gone inside?

You can get blue roses in Venice.Blue is an amazing film by Krzysztof Kieślowski. I have painted many blue masks. I have painted many blue landscapes. I have painted many blue oceans. Some old ladies get their grey or white hair tinted blue. I have mixed feelings about the blues. I love my very blue shirt from Ilse Jacobsen, even though the buttons have cracks. Midnight blue is magical. Blue. Blue. Blue.

2nd excerpt from chapter 10

October Year 2015

The treetops still bore leaves, at the place where she stood. the harsh flapping sound was right above her. Flapping wings tore the beautiful coloured leaves of the treetops in hard relentless movements. Between the trees, towards the water, she could make out something dark, something big, the size of a human being. It went on towards the water, and had soon disappeared. Laura froze, glaring into what had just been a magical morning haze, but in a flash had changed into a wall of heavy fog and strange shadows…

When Laura came home, she wrote:

LOVE and LIGHT WILL ALWAYS WIN

Sometimes it’s cloudy

Sometimes it’s foggy

Sometimes it’s dark

But LIGHT is STRONGEST

LOVE is STRONGEST

LIGHT will always WIN

LOVE will always WIN

LIGHT and LOVE will WIN FOREVER

Chapter 6

October Year 1915

Jonathan brought the tea mug with him, and went to sit by the water. It was about 7 in the evening. It was pitch-dark. He looked at the moon. A mysterious shining globe casting its reflections, which hit the dark, glassy surface of the water. Little Lump came real close to him and looked up on him. The hedgehog had not gone into hibernation in its nest under the log yet; Jonathan wondered why it had not settled down at this point. He knew that hibernation was a very deep and important sleeping process, accompanied by profound changes in the animal’s physiology. The heart beat drops from 180 beats a minute to 20 or less. Breathing almost stops completely and body temperature drops drastically. For a minute he worried that there was something wrong with Little Lump. He wondered if he might not have to wait a bit to set his eel traps, which he always set 3 days after a full moon, that was when the eels migrated. The eels always moved at night, sometimes he did the same because he refused to pay for setting pound nets and eel traps off the smallholdings, which was what you were supposed to do. That was why he often sailed out to set eel traps when night had fallen. The petals from the primroses, which had covered the earth earlier, had been replaced by yellow leaves. The air was damp and cool. He went back and crawled inside the cave, he felt safe here, to be sleeping on the ground, outdoors, on his own island. He settled under the warm blanket. Soon he was sleeping deeply and heavily…

Chapter 5

September Year 2015

Jonathan had a heavy sensation of alarm. He felt dizzy, and he went to the cave, where he poured himself a glass of water from the can. He sat on the ground, resting, while he drank two more glasses of water. Then he returned to the place where he had been chopping wood, and absentmindedly began to stack the pieces of wood. From bottom up, slowly but steadily, he created a circular stack of wood. His thoughts circled around the young girl, like she had been circling around herself over and over. On his skin, sweat lay like the dewdrops of an autumn morning. Now, the circle was closed, but there were still some pieces of wood left. With the leftover pieces, he created three T’s protruding from the circle, thus creating a sign. He looked at the stack of wood with its peculiar shape. Aloud, Jonathan said: – If stars had eyes and looked down on earth now, they would see the sign as it should be seen: The circle with the three T’s. Suddenly, there were a series of strong blasts of wind. The hedgehog moved slowly towards him, and looked up on him curiously…

A Novel in the Making

A Novel in the Making

I am writing a novel. The title is The Glass Wall. The object of this blog is to provide a glimpse of how The Glass Wall progresses. For me, the goal of this blog is that the novel is published and becomes a reality!

Parts of the manuscript are kept secret for now. But I want to share the first chapters and other extracts from the novel along the way. I want to share what inspires me, my challenges, enthusiasm, and whatever happens as we go along.

I love the process of writing, the sparks of ideas, everything being possible. I love the long hard work process of creating a novel. I have used hundreds of hours on the manuscript so far, but I also love the journey of writing a novel: Playing with words, leaving home with sharpened senses to find inspiration. It is so enchanting, the fact that anything can happen until the final sentence.

During the early stages of working with this manuscript, I have discussed it with a select group of skilled and inspiring people. And lately I have turned to the dramaturge, Karen Ravnsted-Larsen, whom I also consulted when working on my fantasy novel, Magda på Dragernes Planet (Magda on the Planet of the Dragons).

The Glass Wall is about finding your way through life. The main character is called Laura, and she is 17.

My dream is The Glass Wall will be published in English.

I hope you will follow its progress on this blog!

Chapter 1

August Year 2015

The smell of wild roses and sea water mingled with the beauty of late summer and a touch of melancholia. I walked down the pea gravel paved path. White sails shone bright against the evening blue sea. It was one of those unusually lovely evenings of late August in which you would want to immerse yourself. A dragon fly flew by. It paused for a moment, right in front of my face, and looked at me with big eyes. It occurred to me that the fantastic insect seemed to have an important message to deliver to me. Inadvertently, I thought of Lucy. I felt a pang from missing her, and I could hear her husky voice inside me saying: – It so typical of you, Laura, to see a dragon fly as a sign. I saw her face before me, the straight dark brows, and below them, the almost black eyes; I saw her wry smile, and heard her laughter, all of which had been put to an end by a ghost driver in an instant. The loss of my only intimate friend was weighing me down. I would do anything to get to see Lucy again. The last time I saw her, we had a falling out. – If only we could meet again, and I could apologize, I whispered, but Lucy was over at the other side now, in a different world. My thoughts passed on to other people from my old school. Early in the summer, I had moved from Copenhagen to a small island, together with my parents, my father had gotten a new job. In August, I had started a new school; I found it difficult to adapt to my fellow pupils at this school; there was no one like Lucy. The dragon fly flew on, and I continued in the same direction, following the path along the sea, I reached the tunnel of trees, as I had named it; above my head, the completely intertwined tree tops created a secluded passage, which led me to an old half-timbered house lying desolated next to a small beach, where I stopped. I took off my shoes, and went bare-footed out into the sand, which was still warm. I went right down to the water’s edge, where jellyfish floated around between seaweed. I sat down, and put my hair in a braid. The water was still and clear. Oh, so still. A three masted schooner glided past in the distance. From where I sat, I was able to look across to another small island. On my island there were many houses, but the island I was looking at was only inhabited by birds. The trees on the small island had died because of the large colonies of cormorants that lived there, as lost souls, the dark birds sat in the pale dead trees. Scattered bird cries could be heard from the island. – What a strange island it was, I thought. After a while, I put on my shoes and got up. Night was falling, and I went back in the direction from which I had come. It was markedly darker inside the tunnel of trees than outside. A dark creature came running from the water and crossed the path ahead of me. The animal, or whatever it was, disappeared into a small thicket of wood. It seemed to be considerably larger than a cat, and it did not like a polecat either. Maybe it was because I had been lost in thought, or else the dark creature really did not have the frame of any animal I knew. The creature had run across the path a good distance from me, and it had a long body. The frame of its head was difficult to make out because of the darkness.

Chapter 2

August Year 2015

I went on through the tunnel of trees. I noticed that I had become a bit tense, and it annoyed me. When I reached the point where the creature had crossed the path, I looked into the woods. There was nothing to be seen except for the inconspicuous fallen branches and leaves, but then I discovered an old gate I had never noticed before. I stopped walking and looked at it. There was a tangle of branches and leaves in front of it. My tenseness disappeared as I approached to examine it. It was an iron gate; three squares over one another, there were flakes of Verdi Gris paint on it. It was difficult to get close to because of the shrubs surrounding it. I fought my way through the shrubs, a branch flicked hard against my cheek, without thinking I put my hand against the cheek, but the pain had disappeared in a second. Now, I was immediately outside the gate, it must have led into an old garden, ages ago; hollyhocks grew in a variety of purple nuances just behind it. A bumble bee was humming. To the left, a tree with red ripe apples towered; I discovered something lying under it. I leaned forward. It was some sort of jewellery, I could see. A necklace. I wanted to know what kind of necklace it was, just lying there in the forest dirt. I could not go round the gate since wild thickets of thorny bushes were growing at both sides of it. I grabbed the gate, it did not budge. I got down on my knees, bent forward and stretched my hand through the squares of the gate, but even though I stretched as much as I possibly could, the necklace was just out of reach. I got up, and brushed off dirt and old leaves clinging to my bare knees. I was intent on getting in through the gate, but decided to go back and check if there was anybody else around first. It would seem too peculiar if someone saw me standing there in the wilderness, trying to get through an old gate. Furthermore, I was not sure whether this was private property. I had returned to the path, and was looking in both directions. There was no one to be seen right now. It was all quiet, only a small black bird sang from the top of a tree. Determined, I returned, and with my shoulder and the side of my body, I pushed through the branches, which again flicked at me and grabbed my hair like animal claws. I wondered what kind of jewellery it was. Again, I stood outside the gate and grabbed it, and it would not budge an inch. A jogger came down the path; I stood completely still. The jogger did not notice me, and once he was gone, I untangled myself from the branches. I did not give in; it was the way I had always been when I was really intent on something. In a last attempt, I put all my weight behind my push. The gate opened, I lost my balance, and stumbled forward, but with a quick motion, I managed to grab hold of the edge of the gate. I was at the other side of it now, just in front of the necklace. I squatted, picked up the necklace and examined it closely. It had a very odd pendant hanging in a really sturdy chain. The pendant was a circle from which three T’s protruded; it was heavy, actually somewhat heavier than I would have thought, it was as if it contained a very heavy burden. The necklace was neither made of silver nor of gold, it looked like copper. The T’s had the typical greenish colour copper gets when it is old and oxidizes. I wondered what the T’s stood for. I got a strange acrid taste in my mouth. I kept on holding the necklace in my hand, while I looked around me. The ground was covered by leaves and ivy. I shifted about a bit, a branch cracked with a dry sound beneath one of my feet. Just then, I discovered a spiny lump, a small hedgehog, which paused for a moment and looked up at me with a strange pair of eyes, then it darted away, right past my foot where the branch had just cracked. It continued into a tangle of shrubs behind a stem of a tree lying next to an apple tree. The acrid taste lingered on. I felt dizzied by the many events of the evening that I had been subjected to. At this moment, the necklace in my hand started to burn, it was glowing hot, and without even thinking, I wanted to get rid of it; in my eagerness to let go of it, I happened to fling it away, making it disappear in the tangle of shrubs where the hedgehog had darted off to earlier. It was impossible to see where it had landed, and now I did not feel safe here anymore. I did not want to stay in the woods any moment longer. My heart pounded uncontrollably. Quickly, I pushed my way through more branches, and ended up in an open area from where I was able to see the path. – Is the necklace cursed? Was all I could think while I paved my way right out to the path. I started to run towards my home…
